The Băiţa Bihor (DNDR) repository was sized for storing
approx. 5000 m3 of conditioned radioactive waste.
Storage of the first packages with radioactive waste started
in 1985 and is to be used further by the year 2040. The
repository is set up in the galleries of a disused uranium
mine in the mountains of Bihor, which is part of the
Western Carpathians.
The area is mountainous and relatively isolated, the nearest
settlement being a small mining village called Băiţa Plai,
located 2 km west of the deposit. The deposit is intended
for accommodating radioactive waste originating outside the
cycle of nuclear fuel, respectively radioactive waste
arising from industrial activities, medicine and research.
Activities the Consortium has to perform for the DNDR
improvement of safety project are presented succinctly in
