CONSORTIUM

COORDINATOR, RATEN-CITON (CO)

Nuclear Energy Technologies Authority (RATEN) - Subsidiary Center of Technology and Engineering for Nuclear Objectives (CITON) provides, for over 25 years, design, engineering, research and development activities, mainly in the field of nuclear energy; being a complete engineering services provider, it provides technical assistance and engineering support for construction-installation works, commissioning, operation and maintenance for nuclear power stations and other nuclear objectives. CITON is involved in activities related to radioactive waste management in the National Nuclear Programme in Romania, including storage and disposal of all radioactive waste.

As a coordinator, it establishes and follows the implementation of the plan for achieving the project and it offers technical, logistic and financial support to the project, throughout its development. By integrating its own experience and the results obtained, it develops guidelines for the optimization of the engineering barriers related to the Băiţa, Bihor National Repository for Radioactive Waste, in order to improve radiological safety and to prepare the closure plan.

PARTNER 1, IFIN-HH (P1)

IFIN-HH conducts research and development activities in a wide variety of fields of fundamental and applied research, such as nuclear physics, astrophysics, particle physics, atomic physics, physics of life and environment, theoretical physics, nuclear techniques and advanced communication systems. With a large number of facilities of national interest, IFIN-HH is an important part of the research infrastructure in Romania, assuming the mission to enhance the positive impact of the nuclear field on the industry and other areas of the national economy, and on society in general, through an offer of professional services.

The National Repository for Radioactive Waste (NRRW) Băiţa-Bihor is exclusively destined for the final disposal of institutional low and medium radioactive waste. They come from research, radioisotopes production, applications of radioisotopes in medicine and classical industry. In view of the closure under radiological security conditions, IFIN-HH, as the administrator of NRRW, must carry out studies, since the operating time, on the engineering barriers which will be made at the closure, on radiological safety assessment after closing and assessing the impact of the institutional control post closure, for a period of minimum 100 years.

PARTNER 2, UTCB (Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest) (P2)

UTCB is an institution of higher education, which introduced the first courses in Romania relating to waste management and constructive solutions for the storage of industrial waste. UTCB conducts research and development activities in the fields of fundamental and applied research in the fields of construction, environmental protection and geotechnical engineering. Through the Department of Geotechnics and Foundations, UTCB participated in founding solutions for the low radioactive waste repository, at Cernavoda. UTCB has dedicated specialists consecrated in complex domains, promoters of new technologies and solutions, young scientists (PhD students) and fully equipped laboratories, unique in Romania. UTCB is a partner institution in the project. The UTCB contribution will be made especially in choosing, testing and designing engineering solutions to close the radioactive waste repository, in order to ensure a maximum level of security in relation to the Geological-Geotechnical environment
